Origin and evolution of the European Communities and of the European Union - EU Institutions - EU Competences - The EU Treaties and the legislation - The Charter of fundamental Rights - Relationship with national legal orders - The single market (namely, free movement of persons) - The EU policies (with special regards to the education policy and European citizenship).

Learning Objectives
Attainment of the basic notions concerning the institutional structure and funtioning of the EU, the EU legislation and the relationship with national legal orders. Knowledge of some aspects of the single market (EU citizenship) and of some EU policies, namely the education policy.

Teaching Methods
Lectures with support of electronic means and of e-learning through the Moodle platform, direct examination in class of materials (legislation ad documents).

Type of Assessment
The learning will be assessed through an oral examination (2-3 questions). The assessment will take into account not only the knowledge of the proposed topics, but also the oral expression capacity and the overall understanding of the phenomenon of European integration.
With regard to the students attending the course, the lessons will be conducted with an interactive method permitting a continuos assessment of the learning. A mid-term or final examination would be agreed with the attending students.

Foundation and development of the European Union (fron the EEC to the current EU). The enlargement. The values of the Union: democracy and protection of fundamental rights. The EU citizenship: meaning and deriving rights. EU competences and their implementation. EU legal sources (Treaties and legislation). The Charter of fundamental Rights. Relationship of EU legislation and national law. EU law in the Italian legal system. The single market and its accomplishment. From the free movement of workers to the free movement of EU citizens. The principle of non-discrimination on the basis of nationality and on further criteria. EU migration policy. The EU Education policy and the programms to foster the s mobility of students.
